Why is Black Peppercorn so expensive?

Why is Black Peppercorn so expensive?

Pepper had always been a very desirable spice and had a great value from the time it is been discovered. It was considered as a luxury item in medieval Europe.

Main reason for this is its rapidly increasing price in the world market.

Spendmatters.com reports that the price of the pepper fell significantly in the year 2008 due to a bumper crop from Vietnam. Since 2008, the prices have continued to rise. In 2006 pepper traded for $1500 a ton and now its around 12000 USD

There is a rapid increase in global consumption between 1991 and 2011 to reach 430000 tons mainly attributed to increased appetite for meat products which uses more black pepper seasoning. And also because of the general rise in wealth and disposable income around the world.
Spendmatters.com also informs that in recent years, consumption has been annually exceeding production.
