Multiple studies and scientific research has shown that the compound curcumin, the active ingredient which is available in turmeric powder works on deteriorated, diseased and damaged cells in the body leaving it healthy.

Even though everyone is well aware of the healing capabilities and numerous benefits of Turmeric Powder, it is also a fact that only 1% of the beneficial curcuminoids are absorbed by the body. This means that curcumin has very limited bioavailability, which is the ease at which any nutrient will get absorbed by the body.

This is mainly because the Turmeric is not water soluble and it clumps together when it comes in contact with water in the gut and leaves it unable to pass through the stomach's lining to enter the bloodstream.

This is definitely a challenge and there are few ways of overcoming the limitations. Few of which have been practiced by our ancestors for a very long time and there are few modern ways of making it work as well.

1. Extracting the curcumin

We usually get 2-8% of curcumin in most of the turmeric preparations. Hence concentration curcumin in the form of supplement is extremely beneficial

2. Consume turmeric with fats

Even though turmeric is not water soluble, it’s curcuminoids get attached to the fat and therefore the gut can absorb it more easily. Coconut Oil, Nut Butters, Nuts, Avocado, fish, Ghee, Butter, Milk of all kinds will optimise the absorption of curcumin in the body in this way curcumin will get directly absorbed into the bloodstream and bypass the liver.

3. Mix with Black Pepper

An active compound present in Black Pepper, Piperine has the ability to boost the absorption of curcumin. Piperine makes it easier for the curcumin to pass through the intestinal wall and into your bloodstream. It is therefore advisable to consume turmeric along with little pepper.

4. Use the whole turmeric root instead of the powder

There are hundreds of compounds in the turmeric root which are beneficial as they all work together to aid the absorption of curcumin.

5. Cook it or boil it (under 15 minutes )

We know that the spices are transformed by heat, its flavour is enhanced along with its ability to be absorbed by the body. It is the same with turmeric. Heating turmeric increases curcumin’s solubility in water. This also enhances its  anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
